Move 1: Types of Parenting

My first move leads me to the topic of the various styles of parenting which include authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved. These four main types of parenting were discovered by a female psychologist by the name of Diana Baumrind. However, psychologists usually categorize these four under two main types of parenting: responsiveness and demandingness. Responsiveness is how much independence the parents are willing to give their child and demandingness is how much obedience parents want from their children. These are the four main types of parenting that are used in every household around the world. These styles of parenting can be intertwined and combined in any given circumstance. One can be an authoritarian parent and be permissive at the same time. A parent can simply just be uninvolved or authoritative. The type of discipline can have a dramatic effect on a child’s development. Whether one is an authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, or even an uninvolved parent, these disciplines all play a key role in a child’s behavior, decision making, and attitude.

Authoritarian parents are very strict and demanding. Authoritative parents, just like the authoritarian ones also have many rules set and enforced; however, there is some leniency when the rules have been broken. Permissive parents are those who are very lenient when it comes to consequences and punishments; however, they are still enforced when the situation is serious. Uninvolved parents are simply those who are uninvolved in their children’s life. Yes, they may provide food and shelter for the child, but they are still separated, not interested in what the child may be doing.
